Example: the same life, elsewhere

A single person living in London in a one-bedroom home, with the average spending of a similar household, spends about £3,350 a month. To keep the same life in Jakarta (South), they would need about Rp 18,375,000 (≈ €900) net a month locally (−77%), i.e. 3.3 times the provincial minimum wage.

For a couple with two children in a two-bedroom home (private or international school), it would take about Rp 85,219,000 (≈ €4,190) net a month in Jakarta (South), i.e. 15.3 times the provincial minimum wage.

Wages

The provincial minimum wage is Rp 5,558,000 (≈ €270) net a month (Rp 5,730,000 gross).

It varies by region: amount in Jakarta (South).

Net of a foreign employee’s health (1%) and pension (2%) contributions; income tax, low at this level, is not deducted. Each province, sometimes each city, sets its minimum.

Average wage: Rp 3,290,000 (≈ €160) net a month.

Healthcare

With a job of more than six months you must join BPJS Kesehatan; many expats add private insurance.

In the example above: with a job of more than six months you contribute to BPJS Kesehatan, the public health insurance (1% of salary): we count your remaining health costs at local prices (£10 a month).

Visa and residence permit

The employer gets your position approved (RPTKA) and applies for your work KITAS; your family follows on a family KITAS. To keep a job abroad, look at the remote worker KITAS (E33G).

Cost: Rp 6,000,000 (≈ €300) per person.

One-year family KITAS; the employee’s work KITAS is paid by the employer.

To live on income from abroad: the remote worker KITAS (E33G, at least $60,000 a year in income) or, from age 60, the retirement KITAS (E33F).
