Calculated on 22 October 2026 with the Vie Ailleurs calculator engine: official average spending of a Paris household (Insee), converted to Moroccan prices (HCP, World Bank), rent outside the sought-after areas, employee health insurance (AMO), Bank Al-Maghrib exchange rate. “Family of 4”: a couple and two children in Moroccan private school; the amount is the household’s net income, from two salaries or one. SMIG: 3,191 DH net a month.

What to remember

  • Living “the French way” takes far more than the average Moroccan salary. Even single and in the cheapest city, you need 8,400 DH net a month, while the average salary declared to the CNSS is 6,149 DH gross. In Casablanca, you need 12,500 DH.
  • Rent makes all the difference. A one-bedroom flat costs about 1,930 DH a month in Fez against 5,130 DH in Casablanca: that is most of the gap between cities. See rent city by city.
  • With children, school weighs heavily. The calculation counts two children in a standard Moroccan private school, about 20,000 DH a year per child, or nearly 3,330 DH a month for two. With the larger home, that is why a family of four needs 26,500 DH in Casablanca, 8.3 times the SMIG.
  • A French salary changes everything. If you keep a French salary and work remotely, the same budget represents about €760 to €1,140 a month for a single person. The calculator shows you what you would have left.
  • A car is not included. With a car (fuel, insurance, maintenance), add several thousand dirhams a month.

How this figure is calculated

We start from the average spending of a Paris household, item by item, published by Insee. Each item is converted to Moroccan prices: rent in the city (DarIndex or Mubawab and Avito listings), consumer prices (HCP, World Bank), electricity, transport, phone. We add what changes by living there: employee health insurance (AMO), school, two return trips to France a year. The total is converted into a net monthly salary.

It is an example calculated with averages. The calculator does the same calculation from your real spending, in your own city, in a few minutes and with no sign-up.

Frequently asked questions

What salary do you need to live comfortably in Casablanca?

About 12,500 DH net a month for a single person living like an average Parisian, without a car, and 26,500 DH for a family of four with private school.

Can you live in Morocco on the SMIG?

Not while keeping a French standard of living: even in Laayoune, the cheapest city in this comparison, you need about 2.6 times the SMIG (3,191 DH net). Many Moroccans live on less, by spending differently (shared housing, local products, little travel).

Which Moroccan city offers the best balance of salary and cost of living?

Mid-sized cities (Laayoune, Ksar El Kebir, Beni Mellal, Meknes…) need the lowest salary. But salaries there are lower too: the big employers are mostly in Casablanca, Rabat and Tangier. The calculator shows you what you can expect to earn in your line of work.

Are these figures gross or net?

Net: it is what should reach your account every month, after social security contributions and income tax.
