Calculated on 22 October 2026 with the Vie Ailleurs calculator engine: official average spending of a Paris household (Insee), converted to Moroccan prices (HCP, World Bank), rent outside the sought-after areas, Bank Al-Maghrib exchange rate.

What really changes the bill

  • Housing. It is the biggest and most variable item: a one-bedroom flat costs five times more in Casablanca than in Laayoune, and a sought-after area adds 4 to 35% depending on the city. See rent city by city.
  • A car. This budget does not include one. With a car (fuel, insurance, maintenance), add several hundred euros a month.
  • Healthcare. The calculation includes health insurance; its price depends on your age and situation (French pension, private insurance). The calculator takes it into account.
  • Imported goods. Local products are cheap; imported branded goods often cost as much as in France, sometimes more.
  • Trips back to France. Two return trips a year are included. If you go back more often, the budget goes up.

And if you work?

This table is for a retiree. For a 32-year-old professional who keeps their French salary and works remotely, the same life, without a car, costs €810 (Laayoune) to €1,180 (Casablanca) a month single: €1,500 is enough in every city in our comparison. As a couple, allow €1,370 to €1,910. See remote work from Morocco on a French salary.

Frequently asked questions

Can you live in Morocco on €1,500 working remotely?

For a single person, yes in every city in our comparison, keeping the same life as in Paris without a car. Also think about tax: if you live and work in Morocco, your salary becomes taxable there in principle.

Can you live in Morocco on a small pension?

Yes, for a single person: even in the most expensive city in our comparison (Casablanca), the same life as in Paris costs about €1,250 a month. With €1,000, you need to pick a mid-sized city (Laayoune, Ksar El Kebir, Beni Mellal, Safi…) or cut the rent.

Which is the cheapest city for a retiree?

Laayoune, Ksar El Kebir and Beni Mellal are the cheapest in our comparison, around €880 a month for a single person. Among the big cities, Meknes remains much cheaper than Marrakech or Casablanca.

Is this budget mine?

No: it is an example calculated with averages. The calculator starts from your real spending, in your own city, and converts it to the Moroccan city of your choice, in a few minutes and with no sign-up.
