The short answer

The net salary you need, city by city
Net monthly salary covering a whole month’s spending (rent, utilities, health insurance, groceries, going out, transport, phone, clothes, two return trips to the UK a year) to keep the average habits of a London household, without a car. | Lugano | CHF 2,730 | CHF 2,980 | CHF 4,290 | CHF 5,570 |
| Bern | CHF 2,680 | CHF 2,960 | CHF 4,220 | CHF 5,460 |
| Zug | CHF 2,660 | CHF 3,230 | CHF 4,240 | CHF 5,460 |
| Lucerne | CHF 2,650 | CHF 2,970 | CHF 4,110 | CHF 5,350 |

| Fribourg | CHF 2,550 | CHF 2,880 | CHF 4,060 | CHF 5,290 |
| St. Gallen | CHF 2,510 | CHF 2,850 | CHF 4,000 | CHF 5,230 |
Calculated on 21 October 2026 with the Vie Ailleurs calculator: official average spending of a London household (ONS), moved to Swiss prices (World Bank), average rent in the canton (FSO), basic health insurance in the canton (FOPH), ECB exchange rates. "Family of 4": a couple and two children at a free state school; the amount is the household’s net income, from one or two salaries. Winterthur has the same figures as Zurich (same cantonal data).
Rent and health insurance: the two costs that make the difference
| City | Studio | 1 bedroom | Health insurance, per adult |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zug | CHF 1,070 | CHF 1,650 | CHF 431 |
| Zurich | CHF 1,160 | CHF 1,580 | CHF 640 |
| Geneva | CHF 1,040 | CHF 1,270 | CHF 752 |
| Lucerne | CHF 930 | CHF 1,260 | CHF 563 |
| Basel | CHF 950 | CHF 1,250 | CHF 704 |
| Lausanne | CHF 940 | CHF 1,250 | CHF 698 |
| Bern | CHF 840 | CHF 1,130 | CHF 682 |
| St. Gallen | CHF 780 | CHF 1,120 | CHF 577 |
| Fribourg | CHF 790 | CHF 1,120 | CHF 607 |
| Lugano | CHF 830 | CHF 1,090 | CHF 740 |
| Neuchâtel | CHF 710 | CHF 930 | CHF 699 |
Rent is the average of all leases in the canton (August 2026), excluding charges: a lease signed today is often more expensive, especially in Zurich, Geneva and Zug. Basic health insurance (LAMal/KVG) is compulsory for every resident and paid by yourself: it is a premium per person, not a share of your salary. Amount: median standard premium of insurers in 2026, CHF 300 deductible, accident cover included; a higher deductible lowers the premium.
Can you live well on CHF 6,000 gross a month?
From a gross salary, the employer first deducts old-age, disability, income-compensation and unemployment insurance, i.e. 6.4%:
| Gross salary a month | After AHV/AVS, IV, EO and unemployment | In pounds |
|---|---|---|
| CHF 5,000 | CHF 4,680 | £4,260 |
| CHF 6,000 | CHF 5,616 | £5,110 |
| CHF 7,024 (median) | CHF 6,574 | £5,980 |
| CHF 8,000 | CHF 7,488 | £6,810 |
Two more deductions follow, which we do not calculate because they depend on your age, pension fund, canton, municipality and family situation: the occupational pension (BVG/LPP, the 2nd pillar) and income tax (withheld at source from the salary for a B permit). The Federal Tax Administration offers an official tax calculator.
Before those two deductions, CHF 6,000 gross leaves CHF 5,616. A single person in a studio needs about CHF 2,960 net in Zurich and CHF 2,950 in Geneva, after tax: check what you would have left after the pension and your municipality’s tax, then compare.
Key points
- Zurich and Geneva are closer than you think. Rent is higher in Zurich, health insurance dearer in Geneva (CHF 752 per adult a month, against CHF 640 in Zurich): alone in a studio, you need CHF 2,960 in Zurich and CHF 2,950 in Geneva.
- Studio or one-bedroom makes a big difference. Alone in Zurich, moving from a studio to a one-bedroom flat takes about CHF 420 more a month.
- A couple shares the rent, not the health insurance. Each adult pays their own premium: a couple with no children needs about CHF 4,370 in Lausanne, not twice a single person’s budget.
- No car included. Public transport is enough in the big cities; with a car, add fuel, insurance, servicing and parking.
How the figure is calculated
We start from the average spending of a London household, line by line, published by the ONS. Each line is moved to Swiss prices: rent in the canton (FSO), World Bank price levels, electricity, transport, phone. We add what changes when you live there: basic health insurance in the canton and two return trips to the UK a year. The total is the net monthly salary you need.
This is an example based on averages. The calculator does the same from your real spending, in your own city, in a few minutes and with no sign-up.
